Prison Nurse Forced to Sign New Union Card, Locking Her Into Mandatory Dues
McGraw v. SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania
Gerri McGraw is a forensic registered nurse at SCI-Waymart State Prison. She claims that SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania officials misled her into signing a new union card.
Gerri filed a state lawsuit against SEIU when she discovered the deception. She alleges that an SEIU official told her that she had to sign a new union card if she wanted voting rights. The union official did not tell her that the new union card ultimately prevented her from ending dues deductions. The only exception being a fifteen-day window once a year.
However, contrary to the union official’s statement, she already had the right to vote. Gerri was already a union member. This means that, according to SEIU’s own rules and membership contract, her membership granted her voting rights.
McGraw v. SEIU is closed.
